About Us

Scott Vankoughnett created OpenIceHockey so that people would have a chance to read the stories that they want. Rather than what the corporate companies want them to read.

Scott is a professional writer/photographer who has covered hockey at all levels including the Stanley Cup finals, NHL Entry Drafts, Memorial Cups and World Junior Championships.

Prior to establishing OpenIceHockey, Scott spent four years as a student at Nipissing University. It was there, with the help of his roommates that OpenIceHockey began in 2004.

In the fall of 2008, Jesse Michael teamed up with Scott to create what you now see.

OpenIceHockey brings you the stories, images and now, video that you won’t read or see anywhere else. In the Spring of 2010 Nathan Dearing joined up with OpenIceHockey to help provide video content on the site.

Based out of Oakville ON, OpenIceHockey has the ability to cover every level of hockey with a greater emphasis on the Canadian Hockey League.

Scott and Jesse are no strangers to arena both growing up playing hockey in the small town of Parry Sound. Yes, home of Bobby Orr. They have covered well over 100 games each in the past two seasons alone, highlighted by ‘09 Stanley Cup finals.

Scott currently has a mountain of hockey books that he is trying to make his way through in order to provide book reviews for the site.

A special thanks must go to Matt Crowley and Greg Maddeaux for their continuous help and hard work on improving the website.
