Inspired by ESPN’s 30th anniversary, ESPN has decided to run an unprecedented documentary series featuring 30 films from some of today’s finest storytellers. Each storyteller has a passion for their respective subject which demonstrated in their films.
The first film, Kings Ransom, was put together by Peter Berg. Berg has been a writer, producer and director of countless Hollywood movies, including Friday Night Lights and Hancock. Interestingly, Berg has a huge obsession with “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky.
When he found out about ESPN’s plan for the 30 for 30 series he signed up immediately. He wanted to tell the story about Gretzky getting traded to LA for what amounted to essentially $15 million or a Kings Ransom.
I have read a lot about the trade and and seen the clips of Gretzky’s press conference. This 50 minute piece is something I have never seen before. The story is told through the words of Gretzky, Kings’ former owner Bruce McNall, Oilers former owner Peter Pocklington and a slew of others. This remarkable story is something every hockey fan should watch.
It’s well worth the watch. Click on this link to watch the film.

You weren’t lying. Such an in-depth look at what was the biggest trade in NHL history. Interesting to hear him say that he would do it all over again if he had the chance, even though he never won another cup
