Steve Thomas named Honourary Captain

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Ontario Hockey League, SUBWAY®, and the Barrie Colts Hockey Club today announced that former NHL star Steve Thomas will serve as Honourary Captain for the SUBWAY® Super Series game to be played in Barrie, ON, Thursday November 19, 2009

“We are really happy to have Steve come in and represent the Colts in such a way” said Colts Governor and President Howie Campbell.  “Steve is a great ambassador for our game and we are really looking forward to him being our Honourary Captain for the SUBWAY® Super Series here on November 19.”

Thomas was born July 15, 1963, in Stockport, England.  “Stumpy” signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs before the 1984-85 season following a two-year OHL career with the Toronto Marlboros capped off by an impressive 1983-84 campaign where he scored 51 goals and 54 assists for 105 points in 70 games.  He split time with the Maple Leafs and the AHL’s St. Catharines Saints in his first professional season where he was the recipient of the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s Rookie of the Year scoring 42 goals in 64 games.

Thomas played 20 seasons in the NHL with six different teams including the Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Might Ducks, and the Detroit Red Wings.  He collected nine 20-goal seasons with his two best years played with the Islanders in 1992-93 scoring 37 goals and 87 points, followed by the 1993-94 season where he scored a career-high 42 goals with 75 points.  In 1,235 career NHL games he scored 421 goals and 512 assists for 933 regular season points. He represented Canada four times in International competition including a gold medal winning performance at the 1994 World Championships.

The Super Series kicks off next Monday with Team Russia traveling to Drummondville, QC for game one.
