On December 12, players from across Canada will meet in Saskatchewan for a chance to represent Canada at this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships. Early today Hockey Canada announced it’s 36-man roster that will participate in camp.
Of those 36, 32 are from the CHL, one is from the NHL and three play college hockey in the USA. Ryan Ellis, Colten Teubert and Alex Pietrangelo are returning on defense. Stefan Della Rovere, Patrice Cormier, Jordan Eberle and potentially Cody Hodgson are the returning forwards.
Maple Leafs first-round pick Nazem Kadri and Kings first-round pick Brayden Schenn were both late cuts last year but that doesn’t mean they have a guaranteed spot. Ottaw 67’s defenseman Tyler Cuma was a lock for last year’s team before sustaining a knee injury and he wasn’t even invited to the final camp this year.
Jake Allen has the most international experience in net but his mediocre performance in the Super Series and so fa this season ensures that the starting role is up for grabs.
Jared Cowan should join Colten Teubert as the shut-down pair on defense now that Tyler Myers is playing for Buffalo. Brandon Gormley has looked very good this season. So good in fact he could be a top-five pick in the draft. A spot on the team isn’t out of question. Travis Hamonic, Shawn Lalonde and Marco Scandella should also be in the mix.
Barrie Colts’ captain Stefan Della Rovere is one player that could play his way off the team after winning gold last year. He frequently took dumb penalties and was often benched by the end of the game. That being said, he is a very effective player when he doesn’t cross the line. Hockey Canada will keep an extra close eye on him.
Cody Eakin was named MVP at the Top Prospects game last year and is a goal a game player in the WHL right now. Brandon Kozun is small at 5′7 153lbs but he’s leading the WHL in scoring. Unfortunately, he’ll be in tough to make the team. Luke Adam and Gabriel Bourque played on a line together during the Super Series and found a lot of success together.
The reigning Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires are well represented with four players invited: Taylor Hall, Ryan Ellis are locks, Adam Henrique and GregNemisz have an outside chance. The number one ranked team in the CHL will be in for a rough stretch when these four players leave for camp.
