Yesterday we looked at the Canadians. Today we’ll head south to see who’s not going to be at the WJC for the Americans.
This list is a much shorter list than that of the Canadians. There are still a couple of interesting names here.
The most obvious player that won’t be participating is Atlanta Thrashers’ d-man Zach Bogosian. The third-overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft might have been released to play last season but was still recovering from a broken leg. The 19-year-old from Massena, NY is playing a much more prominent role with the Thrashers this year even sporting an “A” on his jersey. His eight goals and 22+ minutes a night are reason enough to keep him playing in the NHL.
There’s only one other player that’s still eligible to play and isn’t, Spokane Chiefs forward Mitch Wahl. The second-round pick of the Calgary Flames was not invited to team USA’s camp in Grand Forks this year. He has put up decent numbers in the WHL this season with 11 goals and 33 points in 29 games. Last year he scored a goal, added three assists and was a team leading plus five for the USA team that finished in fifth place.
Defenseman John Carlson of the Hersey Bears will be made available for team USA. Carlson spent last season with the London Knights and has a goal and 17 helpers in 24 games for the Bears this season.
Only three players are returning from last year’s squad: Tyler Johnson, Danny Kristo, and Jordan Schroeder.
Tomorrow we’ll take a look at holes the Russians will have to fill. There’s one player that will leave you shaking your head.
