ANALYSIS: Cormier And Caron Traded At Deadline
The captain of team Canada’s World Junior squad has been traded by the CHL that drafted him.
In a major move right before Thursday’s trade deadline, the Rimouski Oceanic shipped the aforementioned Patrice Cormier, along with Jordan Caron, to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. In exchange, the Oceanic received center Michael Beaudry, winger Alexandre Mallet, two first-round picks in 2010 and a first and second round pick in 2012.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise from the Oceanic, who sit in seventh place overall in the QMJHL with 50 points, one ahead of the Huskies.
Cormier, who, as mentioned, captained team Canada to silver at the World Junior Championships in Saskatoon, was also apart of the team last year that won gold at the World Junior Championships in Ottawa. He was drafted in 2008 in the first round by the New Jersey Devils.
Caron, who was also a member of this year’s silver medal winning team, was in the midst of a wonderful season for the Oceanic, posting 67 points in 56 games – putting him on a pace for a career year. He was drafted 25th overall in the 2009 draft by the Boston Bruins.
The move is speculated to be a set up for the future, as Cormier is supposedly going to get a long look from the Devils next season. Caron could also squeak into the Bruins lineup depending on how their cap situation sits going into next year.
Either way, the move is a bit of a head scratcher, but in a town that is built around their hockey team, the Oceanic have to set themselves up for the future to push towards their goal of a Memorial Cup. Making trades like this are always difficult, but necessary, things to do if you want to stay on top.
