After being suspended indefinitely by the QMJHL earlier in the week, Patrice Cormier’s fate will likely be determined Monday by commissioner Gilles Courteau.
Rumours are that the suspension will be the rest of the season, including playoffs. Although it is not likely that Cormier will be back in the CHL, he is eligible for another season next year.
In what was a vicious hit, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies forward threw a blatant cheap shot at the head of Quebec Remparts’ defenceman Mikael Tam.
As you can see in the video, Tam began to convulse on the ice, and was immediately put on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital for further examination. The 18-year old suffered trauma to the skull and brain and lost many teeth.
This is the second time in under a month where Cormier has been under fire for a “cheap shot” elbow to the head of an opponent.
In a pre-tournament game at the World Junior Championships in Saskatchewan, Cormier knocked out Swedish forward Anton Rodin with a similar hit. There was talk of Cormier being suspended, but the IIHF let it slide.
If you compare this hit to others from this season, it is far worse than Zack Kassian’s hit on Matt Kennedy from last week. It could also end up being more severe than Mike Liambas’ hit on Ben Fanelli; which ended up in a season-long suspension for Liambus.
