Bronco’s Michael Stickland Named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League announced yesterday that Michael Stickland of the Swift Current Broncos is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 28. The forward recorded seven points in two games scoring two goals and adding five assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-4.

Stickland’s seven points led the Broncos to two straight home wins beginning on Friday night against the Regina Pats with a 6-4 victory. He opened the scoring on the power play at 4:05 of the first period and later tallied his 20th goal of the season at 7:01 of the second period. He added two assists for his first four-point game of the season as second star of the game. On Saturday Stickland contributed three assists as part of a 5-3 win over the BC Division leading Vancouver Giants where he was named first star of the game.

Stickland, a 20-year-old from Red Deer, AB, is playing in his fourth WHL season joining the Broncos midway through last season after beginning his career with the Kootenay Ice. He has 20 goals and 30 assists for 50 points in 64 games so far this season.

Voltigeurs’ Jake Allen Named CHL Goaltender of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League announced yesterday that Jake Allen of the Drummondville Voltigeurs is the CHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this month.

For the week ending February 28, Allen went 4-0-0-0 with two shutout victories posting a goals-against-average of 0.500 and a save percentage of .980 while producing the second longest shutout streak in QMJHL history at 188 minutes and 47 seconds.

Allen’s shutout streak began after allowing a first period goal at 6:16 Wednesday night to the PEI Rocket in a game where he made 31 saves to earn a 3-1 victory. The streak continued with back-to-back shutouts including a 22 save performance Friday as second star of a 3-0 win over the Quebec Remparts, and a third star performance Saturday with 14 saves in a 7-0 win over the Gatineau Olympiques. The streak was ended by his former team the Montreal Juniors at 15:03 of the first period on Sunday falling short of the mark of 207 minutes and four seconds established by Mathieu Chouinard of the Shawinigan Cataractes in the 1997-98 season. Allen still made 33 saves to preserve the 4-1 win for the Voltigeurs who have now won 11 straight games.
