Back-To-Back!!!
The Windsor Spitfires are champions of the OHL once again.
In what was a – surprisingly – lopsided series, the Spitfires finished off the Barrie Colts with a 6-2 victory in Windsor Tuesday night.
Although games one and two were close, the Spits ended up dominating games three and four, outscoring the Colts 20-11 in the series.
With the win, Windsor will now head off to the Memorial Cup and attempt to defend their championship. Last year, they overcame a 0-2 hole in the tournament held in Rimouski, Quebec.
Both Taylor Hall and Cam Fowler had two goals and one assist in the deciding game. Hall ended up two points ahead of Kitchener Ranger Jeff Skinner and teammate Ryan Ellis for the OHL point scoring lead in the playoffs with 35.
There could be 10-12 players from the Spitfires who played their final game in the confines of the WFCU center in Windsor. One of those players, Adam Henrique, was named MVP of the finals after he ended up with 20 goals in the playoffs – tied for the league lead.
One of the sideline stories of these OHL finals was Barrie’s drafting of Kerby Rychel – the son of Windsor GM Warren Rychel. The animosity towards the Colts was escalated after the game when Spitfires’ coach Bob Boughner did not shake hands with Barrie’s coach Marty Williamson.
The Memorial Cup runs from May 12-24 in Brandon, Manitoba. Stick with OpenIceHockey for all over your championship coverage as we will be covering the tournament for the second straight year.
