Would you forget to go golfing with the Great One? Meet someone who did!   | read this item

One of my favourite sayings in life is: “It takes money to make money”. Some people have more of it than others and with that comes opportunities those so-called others never see. Often these opportunities encompass both hockey and money and so let me explain

Growing up during the mid 1990’s and witnessing records being shattered by Wayne Gretzky came as no surprise to anyone. Afterall, he was nicknamed the Great One, and whether you loved him or hated him, you had to admit, he was indeed the best player the game of hockey had ever seen. Though I never did like Gretz in my younger years (maybe due to the lack of appreciation I had for what I was watching) I have to admit today I would do pretty much anything to spend some time with the Great One and ask few simple questions on his success and life. I never made it anywhere, aside from being a washed up bum in a beer hockey league, and the closest I could ever get to meeting Wayne would be going to a Flames game and having a seat a few hundred feet away from the Great One when he made his routine appearance with the Coyotes.

Wilson had not only inquired about a stake in the Preds, but also had bought the right to go golfing with the Great One

But in all this comes the ability to make money to afford that seat to the game. Today, I do everything it takes to make that extra buck, and I have changed my vision towards some of the makers and breakers of today’s society. Meet Brett Wilson. Some of you may know him from the CBC’s Show Dragon’s Den. The ex-chairman of First Energy Capital here in Calgary has an estimated net worth in the billions, and recently articles in the Calgary Herald placed him in the front running of ownership to the Nashville Predators. So I had to ask myself, Brett Wilson a hockey fan? Ok maybe, but is he doing this just as a return on some investment. To my shock, it sure sounds like it. Upon reading the article, I find out that Wilson had not only inquired about a stake in the Preds, but also had bought the right to go golfing with the Great One for a charity event, but forgot to show up! He than called the Coyotes to reschedule and his asking to speak to Wayne rose eyebrows from the Coyotes thinking he was going to purchase the team. He assured them he wasn’t and things have remained at a standstill ever since. So far no word has surfaced whether they have tee-off together but I can only hope Wayne’s schedule is far too full for the next 12 months.

Indeed life isn’t fair. At times like this you can only scratch your head and wonder how some of the most powerful people are so lapse-minded and still have a chance at always being further ahead than you.
