Located just south of Parry Sound, Ontario, this year's Halloween Hockey Tournament has an even greater cause attached to it

Located just south of Parry Sound, Ontario, near the home of Bobby Orr, this Halloween Hockey Tournament has been taking place since 2007. However this year’s tournament has an even greater meaning for an even better cause.

Cameron James Penfold passed away suddenly, on Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 at the age of 18 years after being struck by a train while driving in Parry Sound.

Cameron was an avid hockey fan, played the game to the best of his ability, and always lived life to the fullest.

In memory of this, the coordinators decided to dedicated this year’s tournament to Cam, with proceeds going to Helping Kids Play, which gets kids involved in organized sports.

The cost is $700 per team, which guarantees three games. Playoffs will be decided after those three games. The deposit to enter the tournament is $350, first come, first served.

There is also a dance on Saturday night, with a cash bar and prizes to be won.

For more information on the tournament, who to contact, and accommodations in the area, please head to their Facebook page, or http://www.psihl.ca/hhalloween.html

The 20 participating teams in the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament were announced Tuesday. The tournament runs from March 22-26

News release from the Canadian Hockey League

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Greater Toronto Hockey League today announced the 20 participating teams that will compete in the 2011 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament hosted by the GTHL. The event takes place March 22-26 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, ON, with the Championship Final set for Sunday March 27, 2011, at 2:00 pm at Herb Carnegie Arena in Toronto, ON.

The 20 participating teams include the champions and finalists from minor hockey associations across Ontario including Ontario Hockey Federation Member Partners the GTHL, OMHA, ALLIANCE, and an NOHA representative, along with champion and finalist from the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association, and a representative from Hockey Northwestern Ontario. Additional participating teams from Ontario and the United States received invitations from the Tournament Selection Committee.

“The 2011 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament is shaping up to be extremely competitive,” said OHL Director of Central Scouting and Player Development Rob Kitamura. “Last year’s event showed that a wildcard team can excel and win the Championship by coming together and outperforming the rest of the competition at the right time. This year’s group is very similar with talent across the entire 20-team field which should make for an exciting event.”

The complete tournament schedule will be released later this week upon the completion of the GTHL Championship Series between the Toronto Marlies and the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, and the ALLIANCE Finals featuring the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs and the Waterloo Wolves.

The Mississauga Rebels made history last March becoming the first wildcard entry to win the championship final when they defeated the Toronto Marlboros 2-1 to capture their first OHL Cup title. The Rebels were led by tournament MVP and top scorer Sean Monahan who was later selected 16th overall by the Ottawa 67’s in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection.

A total of 175 players that competed in the 2010 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament were selected in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection. 14 of those players were chosen in the first round including four players among the top five picks such as Brendan Gaunce of the Markham Waxers selected second overall by the Belleville Bulls, Scott Laughton of the Toronto Marlboros chosen third overall by the Oshawa Generals, Jarrod Maidens of the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs selected fourth overall by the Owen Sound Attack, and Matthew Campagna of the Toronto Young Nationals chosen fifth overall by the Sudbury Wolves.

Each of the last three players selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft are OHL and OHL Cup graduates including Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning, John Tavares of the New York Islanders, and Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers.

Brandon Sudeyko sits down with Belleville Bulls goaltender, and 2011 NHL draft prospect, Tyson Teichmann

It’s been somewhat of a season of regression for Belleville’s Tyson Teichmann.

After showing promise last season coming into the league as a 16-year old, Tyson was expected to take the ball and run in his sophomore season with the club. However, the opposite has happened as the Bulls’ other young goalkeeper Malcolm Subban – brother to the NHL’s PK – has stolen some of TT’s thunder and is now splitting games with the prospect goaltender.

Ranked 28th among North American netminders and 9th in the Ontario Hockey League, Teichmann has been anything but stellar this season, going 8-22-0-2 with a 4.28 GAA and .880 SV%. Because of this, and the rise of Subban, his stock has fallen in the mind’s of many scouts and teams around the NHL.

Regardless, as you’ll hear in the interview, Tyson remains positive, and is looking to finish the season on a high note.

So sit back and enjoy Brandon Sudeyko’s first contribution to OIH; Five Minutes With Tyson Teichmann

With another Winter Classic in the books, we look back at some of this year's most memorable post-game quotes

With news that this year’s Winter Classic drew a 4.65M viewers, finishing first amongst the 18-49 demographic, it’s time to look back to some memorable quotes on what can now be considered a successful venture for the National Hockey League.

Gary Bettman

“I think it’s a lot of fun for our players. The teams like to participate because for a lot of our players it conjures up memories of their first connection to the game as well.” – When asked about what the Classic means to the NHL

“We really take this one at a time. With every Winter Classic we’ve done, we learned something new, which is why each year we’ve built upon it to create a new dimension for it, and we have to sit down and debrief, take it all in, and then focus on next year.” – When asked about a frontrunner for next year’s classic

Dan Bylsma

“The experience for me and the guys coming out on the field to the fans and the game, I’ve talked to a handful now after the game, and can’t rate it with any other experience that they’ve had.” – On the experience of participating in the Classic

“Great trade for sure getting that guy. I didn’t know what to expect from Jordan tonight and what level he’d be at, but his first period was phenomenal, given the circumstances and the fact that he hasn’t played.” – On the return and play of Jordan Staal

“We’ve joked with the HBO guys that we’ll have to invite them back. We are going to miss them. I thought the show and it leading to the buildup to this game was a unique look, a great experience. Showed a facet of hockey and the game and our players and both teams that I thought was fascinating to watch. I’m not going to look forward to…I guess I’ll be all right with not having a mic pasted right here all day every day” - On whether he would miss the HBO cameras and crews.

Bruce Boudreau

“We kind of like them now. I mean, we didn’t like them much at the beginning of the month, but I think everything’s worked out.” - On 24/7 being over and getting rid of the camera crews.

“And don’t let anybody fool you. It was a game that we wanted to show people that have never played hockey or watched hockey how good it could be, how exciting it could be. The passion on the guys’ faces when they scored a goal was totally genuine.” – On playing in the Classic and how special it was

Alex Ovechkin

You can see, you can hear when we score goals how many people was fans of Washington. I can see a thousand people in one spot, a thousand people upstairs, it was really unbelievable. When it was the National Anthem, and they are screaming, like it was unbelievable. And the fans support us all over the place. So it’s good.” - On what it was like to play in the Classic in front of 65,000 fans

Sidney Crosby

Coming down the tunnel, it’s a pretty amazing feeling. And playing hockey in front of that many people, it’s something that probably none of us ever dreamed of doing. It would have been nice to be on the other side of things, but it’s still a privilege to be part of that. And we had amazing support. The event was great.” – On what it was like to play in the Classic for the second time, but this one at home in Pittsburgh
