Minor Midget Rankings for the 2011 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament – Week 2

The tournament includes 20 participating teams from across Ontario and the United States.  The champions and finalists from minor hockey associations in Ontario, including the GTHL, OMHA, ODMHA, ALLIANCE, and an NOHA representative will participate in the tournament with additional teams identified by the Tournament Selection Committee.

The Mississauga Rebels made history last March becoming the first wildcard entry to win the championship final when they defeated the Toronto Marlboros 2-1 to capture their first OHL Cup title.  The Rebels were led by tournament MVP and top scorer Sean Monahan who was later selected 16^th overall by the Ottawa 67’s in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection.

A total of 175 players that competed in the 2010 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament were selected in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection.  14 of those players were chosen in the first round including four players among the top five picks such as Brendan Gaunce of the Markham Waxers selected second overall by the Belleville Bulls, Scott Laughton of the Toronto Marlboros chosen third overall by the Oshawa Generals, Jarrod Maidens of the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs selected fourth overall by the Owen Sound Attack, and Matthew Campagna of the Toronto Young Nationals chosen fifth overall by the Sudbury Wolves.

Each of the last three players selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft are OHL and OHL Cup graduates including Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning, John Tavares of the New York Islanders, and Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers.

The 20 participating teams include the champions and finalists from minor hockey associations across Ontario including Ontario Hockey Federation Member Partners the GTHL, OMHA, ALLIANCE, and an NOHA representative, along with teams from the Ottawa District Hockey Association, and a representative from Hockey Northwestern Ontario.  Additional participating teams from Ontario and the United States received invitations from the Tournament Selection Committee.

The puck drops on the 2010 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament at 1:15 pm Wednesday when the OMHA’s Whitby Wildcats take on the Oakville Rangers on Rink 2 at the Hershey Centre, with Main Bowl action commencing with the GTHL’s Toronto Young Nationals taking on the OMHA’s Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs at 1:45 pm.  Round-robin games continue throughout the day Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning before Playoff Round action begins Saturday March 20 at 5:00 pm with the first Quarter Final game.  Semi-Final games are played Sunday morning at 9:00 am and 9:30 am before the Championship Final takes place at 3:30 pm March 21^st.

Select tournament games will be broadcast on Rogers Television with a complete schedule to be released prior to the tournament.

A complete list of the 20 competing teams and full schedule will be announced on Monday March 15.  Six teams have officially qualified for the event with another two to secure their placement at the OMHA Championships this weekend.  Two northern representatives are also invited in addition to wildcard teams that are invited by OHL Central Scouting.

Last March, the Toronto Marlboros defeated the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs 5-1 in the championship game to capture the OHL Cup.  The title was their first since 2005 with a team that included current New York Islanders rookie John Tavares and Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner.  The Marlboros also led the way with a total of 13 players taken in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.

First overall pick Daniel Catenacci of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds competed in the 2009 Showcase as captain of the York Simcoe Express, while his current Greyhounds rookie teammate Nick Cousins led the tournament in scoring with 13 points in six games as a member of the Quinte Red Devils.  First round selections Boone Jenner (Oshawa Generals) of the Chiefs and Ryan Strome (Barrie Colts) of the Marlboros finished tied for second in tournament scoring with 11 points in seven games.  Second and third overall picks Alan Quine (Kingston Frontenacs) and Ryan Murphy (Kitchener Rangers) also competed at the event last season with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens and York Simcoe Express respectively.

Several current OHL stars are graduates of the OHL Cup including Taylor Hall and Ryan Ellis of the Windsor Spitfires, Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers, Ethan Werek of the Kingston Frontenacs, and John McFarland of the Sudbury Wolves.

Just a few minor moves in the top-10 this week. The Marlies and Jr. Canadiens swap second and third and the Jr. Knights climb ahead of the Wildcats. Only two weeks left until the Showcase Tournament begins in Mississauga.

No surprises this week in the rankings as the top teams remain the same. The only change coming with the Honeybaked U16’s jumping ahead of their league rivals the Compuware U16’s. Even the honourable mentions stay the same this week.
